Standoff Ends After Man Barricades Himself Inside Area Home

A 55-year-old City of Poughkeepsie man who barricaded himself inside a home threatening to shoot people has surrendered to police.

The incident began around 10:13 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, when City of Poughkeepsie police responded to 204 N. Hamilton St., for a report of a man threatening to shoot people with a gun, said City of Poughkeepsie Police Capt. Richard Wilson.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the residence was made of up of several rooms rented by different people. Police were able to confirm that the suspect, identified as Lorenzo Jackson Jr., was the only person home at the time, Wilson said.

Members of the hostage negotiations team were a part of the initial response and immediately made attempt to contact Jackson.

The immediate area was secured by the City of Poughkeepsie Police along with members of the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office. Emergency services officers were also called to the scene, he added.

After some time, hostage team members made contact with Jackson and arranged for his safe exit from the building, Wilson said.

He came out of the building around 1:25 p.m., and was taken into custody without further incident.

Jackson, who currently has several outstanding warrants, including for criminal contempt, as well as vehicle and traffic violations, has a lengthy arrest record with some 44 arrests, Wilson said.

He is also wanted in the Town of Poughkeepsie on several warrants. 

The investigation is continuing at this time.
